Never too Young to Plant a Tree

Learning about Tree and Plant Health Care starts early.  From a young age, children are fascinated by the world around them and Mother Nature provides them with unending entertainment and learning opportunities- from falling leaves to crawling insects-  there is never a dull moment.  With the onset of climate change, never has it been so vitally important to encourage and educate the next generation to become green citizens who care and understand the environment around them.

There are many ways to nurture a small child’s interest in the environment using techniques that will holistically aid their overall development. Here are just a few ideas:

Babies are incredibly observant and love to watch their caregivers going about their daily lives and tasks.

  • Simple activities like watching a parent cutting the grass or weeding the garden will pique their interest.
  • When going out for a walk a point out the local wildlife and plants. Talk to them about what they are seeing using simple vocabulary like bird, tree or flower. This will not only benefit their language development but will create excitement when they begin to recognise the objects for themselves and eventually start to name them.
  • Let them smell different scents- leaves, flowers seed pods. Touch a variety of textures- tree bark, petals, grass.
  • Consider planting a tree in your child’s honour after they are born so it can grow as they do.

Toddlers/ Kindergarten Kids:

Toddlers are renowned for being into everything and wanting to ‘help’. It is the perfect time to get them enjoying the great outdoors by allowing them to complete simple, age- appropriate tasks.

  • Watering plants
  • Planting seeds in pots
  • Making an art collage from leaves, twigs, pebbles.
  • Dig in the dirt/ make mud pies
  • Point out trees, plants, flowers, and insects using the correct terminology for example- Fig Tree, Grevillia, Bull Ant.   Point out and name the fruits that a tree may grow.

Primary School Age Children:

Once the children reach school age, their love for the outdoors and environment is hopefully established.  If provided with an opportunity to spend time outdoors, they will learn so much and develop new skills.  Learning about the science of plants, birds and animals, the weather, the environment and plant nutrition will develop their reasoning; understanding of cause and effect and if allowed to care for plants, increase their sense of responsibility.

  • Give them their own garden space, whether a few pots or a vegetable bed. Allow them to grow interesting plants such as sunflowers, pumpkins, tomatoes.
  • Set up a worm farm
  • Show them the signs for ill-health or disease in trees and encourage them to check the trees every few months.
  • Encourage them to take part in a variety of gardening activities that will improve Plant and Tree Health Care- planting, mulching and weeding
  • Plant a tree that will grow with them.  Take a six-monthly photo of the tree with the child standing beside it to track both of their physical development.
  • Plant flowers or trees that will attract butterflies, ladybirds, insects and birds.
  • Encourage questions, tell them scientific names for the trees and plants- use the internet together to find out interesting facts about the plants.

Inspiring children to develop a love for the great outdoors will positively impact on all aspects of their lives and that of future generations.  Heritage Tree Care is a Brisbane based tree care company who is passionate about caring for the environment, one tree at a time.
