Stressed Trees are More Vulnerable to Attack

Trees that are innately healthy can generally withstand plenty of rough treatment and are equipped to deal with the elements and attacks from pest or fungus.  The healthier the tree the more likely they will remain in good condition and be able to fend off attacks, however, trees that are already diseased or dying are much more vulnerable and likely to be attacked by borers. Trees that are badly pruned and have pruning wounds are often the first point of entry for borers so it is imperative that trees are always pruned to Australian standards by qualified and experienced Arborists.

What is a Borer?

Borers are insects, usually beetles or clearwing moths that lay their eggs inside or on trees.  Their larvae feed on the living tissue of wood, which weakens the tree to the point where over time the branches break.

Signs Your Trees have Borers.

In order to find out whether your tree may have borers living on or inside your tree, there are some obvious signs you can look for.  Check the trunks, branches and stems in the tree for tiny holes that have been cut into them.  These holes can differ in shape, either be perfectly round or somewhat oblong.  There might also be what looks like sawdust (frass) below these holes or cylinders of frass from where the borers have excavated tunnels in the tree.

If borers are attacking the trunk and branches of the tree it is because borer attack is generally more severe in trees that are already under stress.  To begin with, remediation options may help to alleviate this stress and aid the trees natural defensive mechanisms. It would be sensible to consider remediation options and to prevent trees from becoming stressed in the first place:

  • Installing mulch were possible to areas beneath the tree.  Aged Forest Mulch should always be applied at a depth no greater than 75mm and should not be applied close to the trunk of the tree.
  • Fertilising the tree by applying an organic fertiliser to the trees root zone.
  • Conducting a root plate injection within the trees root zone may also help to improve the health and vigour of the tree.
  • Watering during dry periods may also be required.
  • Using chemicals: the use of a product such as Beyer- tempo that is a contact insecticide that sits on the surface of the branches and trunk as well as the walls of the borer holes if applied thoroughly.

If you suspect your tree may have a borer infestation it is prudent to receive advice from an Arborist as to whether the tree can be treated or in fact, is past the point of saving. For advanced infestations,  tree removal is the only option for safety reasons and should be completed by professional Arborists to avoid the borers spreading to nearby trees.
