A Basic Guide to Tree Planting by Heritage Tree Care

18 September 2019 by Heritage

We all understand how important it to plant trees not only to yourself but to the overall good of the planet and there is a wealth of benefits. As a wise man once said ‘A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.’ Greek Proverb.

Ask an Expert Arborist

Before planting a tree there are quite a few things to consider such as species, area, root growth, climate, sapling maintenance and of course long-term tree maintenance.

Let’s be honest, the easiest way to plant a tree is to get the tree planting team at Heritage Tree Care to do it for you! Not only can our Arborists assist with species selection for your specific garden or landscape environment, we can supply, deliver and install the new trees to the highest specifications meaning the only equipment you need to lift is the telephone.

If you need to be further convinced, the Heritage Tree Care tree planting team will

supply and deliver everything needed to plant your new tree at a convenient time with minimum hassle to you.  This includes:

  • Soils,
  • Mulches,
  • Stakes and ties,
  • Composts and fertilisers,
  • All other sundry items.

The team will also remove all the excess waste so you can just sit back and enjoy watching your new tree grow.

As if that wasn’t enough, our resident Agronomist Andrew McLennan has been developing some unique new plant health care products such as a high grade liquid organic fertiliser to make sure you have the best performing trees around in Brisbane and beyond.

Do It Yourself Tree Planting

If you would prefer to plant the trees yourself, follow these basic principles to make sure you avoid some common mistakes which can be detrimental to your trees performance and which can even lead to tree death.

  • Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball being planted. And don’t be shy, the bigger the hole is the better it will perform.
  • Always make sure the hole is the right depth. The top of the root ball should be flush with finished grade.
  • As a rough guide, blend the excavated soil with a good quality organic compost, somewhere around 50/50 is a good start. This will be used for backfilling.
  • Using a garden fork loosen the bottom and the edges of the hole to improve drainage, aeration and to promote root penetration.
  • Before planting the new tree loosen the roots around the edge of the root ball, plant the new tree to the correct depth and backfill with the modified soil, gently compacting around the root ball.
  • Install tree stakes and ties if necessary, mulch and water in well.

If you follow these basic guidelines, chances are you’ll have a new tree which should grow well but as professional arborists we can elevate your tree planting project to the next level. Our knowledge and experience combined with the benefits of premium quality tree stock and soils, customized plant health care strategies, and supplementary services such as formative pruning will mean your trees establish faster, grow quicker and require less maintenance in the future.
