Soil Decompaction & VOGT

Soil Decompaction Services.

Heritage Tree Care is delighted to offer soil decompaction services to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution to the common problem of compacted soil in South East Queensland. A cutting-edge portable soil injector will aerate the soils while simultaneously injecting nutrients and fertilizer deep into the ground to improve the overall condition and health of the soil.

What is VOGT?

VOGT is a hand-held soil excavation tool connected to a large air compressor. A high-pressure stream of air is channelled through a nozzle which then breaks soil into smaller particles and similar to vacuum excavation which uses water instead of air, it does not harm the ground, the tree roots or any other underground utilities or pipes.

Traditionally arborists have only been able to safely examine trees parts that are above the ground however the VOGT enables arborists to examine the root flare – that part of the trunk that converges into root tissue.  Revealing the root flare can provide an arborist with valuable evidence regarding the overall wellbeing of the tree.  It is a noisy and dirty process but is a very effective and efficient way to uncover tree roots.

DISCLAIMER: Do not attempt to operate the VOGT device in the manner being demonstrated to the right. This photo demonstrates what occurs underground during the usage of a VOGT device. This demonstration was conducted by a professional VOGT operator.

Declining Tree Health.

Soil compaction can severely impact plant health by restricting root growth, reducing oxygen flow, and limiting water absorption. Our decompaction service uses advanced techniques like air spading and mechanical aeration to break up compacted soil layers without damaging tree roots.

Soil compaction is usually caused by several stressing factors, but the most egregious causes usually include; the usage of heavy equipment/vehicles in one area that compacts the soil over time or the prolonged and excessive flow of rain can compact soil, more so if it’s clay-rich.

Diagnosing Tree Root Issues.

If an arborist suspects that a tree’s roots may be decaying, using a VOGT is the quickest and safest way to confirm or rule out their suspicions. Root decay needs to be quickly treated as if left untreated it will certainly cause the tree’s health to decline and ultimately fail.

The VOGT is a tool that can tell the arborist if anything around the tree base looks unhealthy. If extra soil has been added around the base of a tree, then this can have a disagreeable consequence on the tree’s well-being.  The arborist can inspect a bare root flare and determine if structural roots show signs of decline or decay.

Tree Health Problems.

If you notice any of your trees/plants declining, early diagnosis and treatment is the most effective solution. If you’re worried, its best to consult a qualified arborist sooner rather then later. Common signs of decline in trees can include:

Pre-Mature Leaf Drops + Discolouration.

Early signs of health problems can often be identified by the state of the tree canopy. Leaves will often begin to turn yellow in colour and will drop pre-maturely.

Increase of Pest/Insect Presence.

Pest Infestations are easily identified by an increased presence of pests in or around the canopy of a tree or by the presence of other tell tale problems with the tree itself.

Fungal Growth.

Fungal Growth along the trunk, roots or limbs of a tree are easily identifiable by the oddly coloured jacket that often envelops the surface of it’s host.

Borers.

The presence of wood sap holes across the surface of a tree is one of the tell tale indicators of a wood borer infestation. These holes are created by the offspring of certain insects that drill into the surface of the tree to feed off the glucose present. They can be extremely damaging in great numbers and leave the tree susceptible to secondary infection.

Back to Health.

If the problem is identified in time the tree/plant can often be brought back to health by injecting a specially formulated Bio-activating liquid organic fertiliser into the root plate.  The fertiliser acts as a health boost for the failing tree. Some of the benefits can include:

Improved Plant Health.

Bio-Stimulants will have an overall net positive impact on the health of a tree. Trees that are given boosters can bounce back from significant damage if cared for.

Natural Pest and Disease Suppression.

Stimulant boosters often include various minerals and nutrients that stave off pests for a time after injection, similar to how a vaccine works on humans.

Boosted Growth and Fertility.

Bio-Stimulants include dense nutrients that significantly boost the growth and fertility of plants and trees alike, helping fresh plantings take root faster than in the wild.

Improved Water Retention.

Decompacted soil allows for a significant improvement in a trees ability for its roots to absorb nutrients.

Furthermore, trees based in clay-rich soils benefit from an increase in water absorption and throughput and a reduction in disease risk as a result of less water pooling on the surface.

Act Now

Root Plate Injections are more effective if they are injected as soon as a problem is identified. A fully diseased or failing tree will take longer to respond to treatment so make sure you regularly inspect your trees for signs of stress.  Give us a call and one of our Consulting Arborists will inspect the tree and recommend a Root Plate Injection treatment to give your tree the best possible chance of survival.
